
Sleep Disorder Medication
There are as many sleep disorder medications as there are sleep disorders, many of which a sleep disorder doctor will prescribe to fit your specific needs. The following is a list of common drugs which are used to help sleep disorders, how they are taken, and common side effects:
Klonopin: Used to treat seizure disorders and other forms of panic attacks, it belongs to the class of medications known as benzodiazepines which produce a calming effect on the brain and nerves of the central nervous system. Klonopin acts by enhancing the effects of the natural chemicals in the body.
Ambien: This is used to treat many sleep problems but specifically insomnia. Ambien will help patients fall asleep faster, stay in REM sleep longer and reduce the frequency of sleep interruptions throughout the night. Ambien is a sedative and produces a calming effect in the brain.
Dalmane: This is a medication designed for short term use in helping patients deal with insomnia for no more than 10 days at a time. It also helps patients fall asleep faster while decreasing the amount of times the patient wakes up during the night while keeping the patient asleep for long periods of time. This is a sedative and induces a calming effect in the brain.
Doral: This is a medication used for short term treatment of insomnia for up to seven days. Doral helps the patient fall asleep faster, decreases the number of times the patient wakes up in the night and allows the patient to sleep for longer periods of time. It is a sedative/hypnotic and creates a calming effect on the brain.
