Sleep Disorder Treatment

In many cases, a primary physician will recommend that someone suffering from a type of sleep disorder should visit a sleep clinic or sleep disorder center for treatment of their sleep disorder symptoms. It is at sleep disorder clinics that most cases of narcolepsy, heart palpitations, and sleep apnea. Usually a diagnoses of the particular sleep disorder requires a two to three night stay during which the patient is observed and heart, brain, breathing and rhythms are monitored. Via test results the sleep specialist will be able to make a determination on the specific sleep disorder and assign a course of treatment.

It is up to the sleep specialist to assign a specific sleep disorder treatment, though many times sleep disorders have to do more with environmental issues such as stress, illness, caffeine and alcohol intake as well as any emotional issues including medication for any of the above. In many cases lifestyle is also a determining factor that can and does affect sleep rhythms. Most sleep disorder doctors specialize in circadian sleep rhythm disorders.

Good sleep hygiene such as sticking to a regular bedtime schedule, avoiding naps during the day, no overly stressful activities such as exercise two hours before bed, engaging in relaxing activities such as yoga or reading before bed, keeping a cool and quiet bedroom, avoiding caffeinated products and staying away from alcohol or cigarettes before bed.
