What Causes Shoulder Pain?

While most shoulder pain is a result of a injury to the ligaments or muscle, there are some conditions that affect the heart, lungs, spinal cord, and abdominal organs that can cause severe shoulder pain.

The following is a list of causes for acute shoulder pain:

  • Broken Collerbone: If you are playing sports and fall on an outstretched arm then you can make your collarbone break.
  • Bursitis: This is the sax that covers the shoulder joint to provide a cushion for the muscles. When the bursa becomes swollen and irritated then it can become painful.
  • Heart Attacks: While the problem may be resolved through approaching a course of treatment to the heart, the seizing of muscles can actually cause extreme shoulder pain.
  • Broken Shoulder: A broken shoulder blade is usually the result of some kind of extreme force trauma, such as a car accident.
  • Rotator Cuff: The group of muscles that make up the rotator cuff are all centered in the shoulder joint and can be injured in any number of sports that involve throwing over a long period of time.
  • Shoulder Separation: When the collarbone and shoulder blade is separated that means the ligament has been stretched or torn to the point where the shoulder actually separates.
