What Causes Ankle Pain?
Ankle pain is caused by a variety of different reasons – such as tendinitis which is a type of injury resulting in inflammation along the tendons and soft tissues that join the muscles to the bone of the leg and help control the ankle itself.
The most common ankle joint injuries occur with athletes or those who enjoy exercises that involve jumping and swift movement, such as tennis, basketball, or football.
Other sporting and recreational activities that commonly aggravate the tendons inside the ankle include gardening, hiking, running, jogging, and sometimes sport swimming.
Knowing when to call your doctor is important, as most ankle injuries require immediate care from a physician. If you have the following conditions then you should visit a doctor as soon as possible:
- Unable to walk on the injured ankle
- Visible deformity around the injured ankle joint
- Chronic pain that does not subside at night or while resting
- Chronic pain that lasts beyond three days
- The injured ankle is not able to bend
- Swelling and discoloration around the joint and the calf
- Any sign of infection around the injured joint, along with redness, warmth, or fever
